Wizbit

A bizarre hybrid of Playschool and Penn and Teller, 'Wizbit' was actually more of a space-filler than a proper show in its own right. Every episode (the word used here in the loosest of senses) basically involved a hackneyed magic trick of some kind, with the only spin put on the old formula being the performance of said trick by a conically (and comically) shaped yellow being by the name of Wizbit. A patronising repository of arcane magic words and rather less arcane tricks, Wizbit was little more than a poor man's Paul Daniels: an irony compounded by the fact that the man poncing around like a mutant traffic cone shouting "Ha-ha-this-a-way!" was, in fact, Paul Daniels. My, how the mighty have fallen, eh? 'Wizbit' was, as we all know, just one of a series of public humiliations Paul suffered throughout the 70's and 80's, leaving him the bitter and twisted husk of a man we know and more or less ignore today. Perhaps the most damning indictment on the whole thing can be made by the observation that 'Wizbit' was probably Daniels' finest hour, but whether this reflects more poorly on the show or on the man is anyone's guess.
